Online resources: Summary: The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) has been carrying out all-India household surveys on Consumer Expenditure and Employment & Unemployment with a large sample usually once in every five years. The sixth such survey was conducted in the 55th round (July 1999-June 2000) - which covered Non-agricultural Enterprises in the Informal Sector in addition. The schedule of enquiry on Consumer Expenditure for the survey was, more or less, similar to that adopted in previous quinquennial rounds. The present report is the fourth in the series of reports through which the results on consumer expenditure survey are being released. It contains detailed tables giving estimates of monthly per capita consumer expenditure for all the items for which either 10% of households reported consumption or average monthly per capita expenditure is 50 paise or more along with the estimated proportions of households consuming each item during the last 30 days or 365 days (the period for which the consumption data were collected) for rural and urban areas of each State and Union Territory of India. This report also deals with possession of durable goods in India during 1999- 2000. This report has five sections and one appendix. Section One of the report is introductory while Section Two presents Concepts and Definitions. Section Three gives Sample Design and Estimation Procedure. Section 4 discusses per capita expenditure estimates of important items of consumption. Sectoin 5 presents information on the number per 1000 of households reporting possession of specific durable goods. The detailed tables are provided in the Appendix. The Field Operations Division (FOD) of the Organisation conducted the fieldwork for the survey. The collected data were processed and tabulated by the Data Processing Division (DPD) of the NSSO. The Survey Design & Research Division (SDRD) of the NSSO developed the survey design and prepared the report.
