In the rich maritime history and heritage of India, arguably, no episode is of greater significance than the naval expedition of Rajendra Chola in the first quarter of the 11th Century across the Bay of Bengal to the Sri Vijaya kingdom. This naval expedition was the culmination of maritime experience over a period of about four centuries (since the Pallava days). This cumulative nautical wisdom has come to be recognized as the Chola Navigation Package. The objective of the book by Prof B Arunachalam (Retd) is to reconstruct to the extent possible, based on available material sources, a reasonably cogent argument and discussion on the ‘Chola’ mode of navigation.
