Summary: This paper discuss about Indian banking sector consists of a large number of public and private sector banks and an increasing number of foreign banks, whose presence is largely restricted by RBI branch licensing.there is an overwhelming number of cooperative banks which have a large rural presence but are not subjected to very stringent disclosure requirements.the advent of stringent capital adequacy norms and need to improve the asset quality has led to potential for consolidation in the sector.
