Summary: Over the last few years, we have seen an evolution in the way capital markets look at the effects of a business on the well-being of society in general. This has garnered the focus of investment management firms towards what are colloquially called impact investments. The investments are made with the intent to bring a “positive impact”, creating some form of social and environmental benefits. Therefore, these investments are directed to achieve impact goals rather than financial goals. And India is currently at the centre of it all, a country that has high social needs accompanied by a strong economy and therefore generating high interest from global investors. In fact, to meet its sustainable goal development targets, India would need investments of over $0.6 tn according to studies. India has come a long way since 2010 when the annual impact investments measured $0.5 bn, which in contrast have risen to $5.8 bn in 2022.
