Summary: The report begins with the intricate details of the current identity management systems, namely Aadhar and DigiLocker, outlining their operational mechanisms and identifying possible drawbacks. Aadhaar's centralized data collection raises privacy and security concerns, including the potential for misuse and data breaches, identity theft, technical glitches, lack of consent control, and the risk of profiling. DigiLocker suffers from low adoption, excessive information sharing, high user involvement, and limited interconnection. Furthermore, a survey has been conducted to understand the experience and concerns regarding the existing identity verification systems accumulating 50+ responses. Additionally, the concept of Decentralized Digital Identity (DDI) has been researched along with, its benefits and its application in various fields across the world to overcome these security concerns with Aadhar and DigiLocker. We propose Ekikaran, a decentralized digital identity wallet with a focus on privacy, usercentric control, and interoperability, for India. By enabling users to maintain numerous identities and credentials in one location, it provides a more simplified experience, increasing convenience and trust in digital interactions while reducing the need for extra verification steps. The intricate workings of Ekikaran have been thoroughly explained using examples. The potential use cases of Ekikaran on an individual level, government level, and private institution level have been examined. For individuals, it can ease the process of travel, healthcare, microcredit, and other government benefits. While government institutions benefit from reductions in tax evasion, electronic voting, and refugee assistance, private institutions can streamline customer experiences, enhance efficiency, and reduce fraud through seamless onboarding and secure, transparent transactions. Lastly, a simplified user interface (UI) for the app has been wireframed, and several strategies for overcoming cultural acceptance have been put forth.
