In mid-2004, two researchers took the initiative to prepare and edit a publication that would constitute an initial compilation of main results from a number of case studies with a focus on women and gender that had been carried out within and in relation to the NCCR North-South programme. The book is divided into two main sections conceptual and case studies bound together by an introduction and synthesis written by Christine MHller. The aim of the conceptual section is to lay out issues relevant to gendersensitive research, and emphasise the nature of transdisciplinary and participatory work, as well as the challenges of making such research useful and relevant to practical promotion of sustainable development through a gender-sensitive approach. The case studies are diverse. They include various types of research being done at the PhD level, along with some at the masterHs level, and range from studies in their initial stages to those that have been completed.
